Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
With a built-in Walkman 2.0 player, and an onboard 2.0-megapixel digital camera, the Sony Ericsson W610i is a powerful and portable multimedia handset. Enjoy one-click access to your music tracks with the featured Walkman key, and take picture perfect shots with the feature rich camera. Other great features include an M2 memory card slot, stereo Bluetooth, EDGE data, picture blogging capabilities, quad-band GSM, and more.

Design
The W610i's slim candybar form factor keeps things stylish and portable. Because of this design, from the rear, the phone resembles a digital camera, and with its built-in 2.0-megapixel camera lens and advanced camera features, it performs noticeably well as a camera. The top of the device features a massive 176 x 220 display on the front side and a pronounced camera system on the other. The camera unit, which is protected by a lens cover, features 2.0-megapixel resolution, as well as an LED flash and other advanced features. Meanwhile, a five-way directional button on the front of the device controls most of the phone's menus and features. An M2 memory stick slot is provided for easy memory expansion to augment the phone's 64 MB of built-in memory. In addition to USB and Bluetooth connectivity, the W610i also has an infrared receiver for data synchronization. Additionally the handset features USB mass storage support.

Calling Features
The W610i's phone book can hold all your contacts with multiple entries per contact. A call list remembers your most recent missed, received, and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling up to 50 of your contacts as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included and there's even a bundled application that lets you mix your own ringtones with up to 16 tracks. Picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode.

Because the W610i is Bluetooth-enabled, you can use a variety of headsets and handsfree kits for total wireless freedom when you're on the go.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
If you're looking for a mobile office partner, the W610i has you covered. Support is built-in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound, and video via SMS or MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. Instant messaging is also supported and the phone ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols. There's also a built-in Web browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the W610i, as it supports the GPRS protocol. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the W610i, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock. Use theW610i's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your W610i. As previously mentioned, the phone also supports a USB mass storage mode, allowing you to store and transport important files like documents, images, and music files.

Imaging and Entertainment
Blurring the lines between high-end digital cameras and cell phones, the built-in 2.0-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus is ideal for catching and sharing smiles on the fly. Use your shots to keep in touch. Send a picture message, or upload to your blog for all to see. You can even connect a USB cable and send straight to a printer. The phone's camera also supports video capture and playback. Video clips are ideal for those unexpected great moments in life. Use the pictures you take as wallpaper to dress up your phone to your different tastes. There's even an included application called Video DJ that allows you to edit video footage right on your phone. Make it look great with advanced editing options before uploading footage to your blog.

The W610i is a powerful gaming companion, too, with support for enhanced, Java-based 3D gaming. The phone comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from Sony Ericsson. Lastly, the W610i has a built-in Walkman MP3 player and built-in FM radio with search function and RDS, so you can load up your memory card, or tune into the radio and listen to your favorite music on the go.

The W610i also sports an airplane mode feature, which allows the user to safely use the non-wireless functions of a phone (such as music, games, or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight.

Vital Statistics
The Sony Ericsson W610i weighs 3.4 ounces and measures 4.0 x 1.80 x .50 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7 hours of digital talk time and 336 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Needs work on buttons and audio jack connection   November 6, 2008
Owen Owens
Good phone, good size, good features. (Mine is black front/grey back)

Problems:
1. buttons could be much better. They are small and under the number. Even on 100 year old phones the user would put their finger right on the number they wanted to activate for dialing. Same goes for computer keys.

2. the audio jack and USB connection use the same port. This makes the headphones need an adapter to plug into the phone, and it is a bulky adapter. The phone has bluetooth capability, why not get rid of this bulky connection from the phone and the need for a USB cable and send the user a $3 USB bluetooth dongle for when the user wants to connect to a computer? Also there are other far batter, less bulky connections on phones to allow for handsfree connection.

3 out of 5 stars Great Walkman Player, Average Camera   December 12, 2007

The Sony Ericsson w610 has really smooth, curvy and downright gorgeous lines, but as the phone's front chassis is really glossy, if you take a little closer look at the unit, you will notice some slight unevenness on the surface. I've compared my own unit with a few other w610, and some of them look better and some of them look worse than mine, but given the fact that the phone is an entry level device (given the multimedia specifications and the price), I suppose Sony Ericsson has no reason to pay too much attention to the built quality of the phone.

The sound of the multimedia player of this device is absolutely sublime. The built-in 5 band equalizer hits all the right frequency bands, with very punchy and deep, low-end bass and very high and sharp treble. The improved software has eliminated the annoying "clicking noise" found on the k750, w800, w810 and even the w850 whenever you change tracks or pause or stop a song midway. Instead of a sudden stop followed by a loud click, the music fades in or out when you press the play / stop button.

The camera, although comes with the much missed auto focus feature (missing from all the W series since the w850i was lauched, making all the w series models essentially nothing more than just Walkman phones with cheap cameras), is a step down from the w800 and the w810. The images are generally very noisy (lots of color noise over the entire image), and the shuttle speed / ISO adjustment is really poor under the Auto mode. If you're taking any pictures inside a well-lit office, be sure to turn on the sports mode (under scene selection) or prepare to end up with blurred images. The virtual shuttle goes as slow as 1/8 in most places under the auto mode, which makes no sense to me. Also, it seems that the lowest the ISO can go to is around ISO 125, which i suppose is not a problem since some high end Sony cameras even start with ISO 160, but the noise level of the images taken at ISO 125 is so high that it makes you wonder if the camera is actually shooting at ISO 600 or higher.

I have a feeling the w800 and 810 will probably go down in the Sony Ericsson history as two of the most well rounded candy-bar Walkman phone models.

The video shooting quality of this model is typically Sony Ericsson (at less than the size of a postage stamp).

So if you're looking for a really compact Sony Ericsson model that plays music well and look really good, this phone is a really good buy given the price tag. But do test out the camera features or check out samples of the pictures taken with the built-in camera and make sure you can live with the quality of the images before putting your money down for it.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Nokia's phone....   October 18, 2007

If you love Nokia's phone is because you don't have a Sony-Ericsson's phone..... It the best phone...... It's amazing.... 6 stars!!!!

Saludos.....
Have a nice Day....

5 out of 5 stars This is it   August 27, 2007
End of silence

Well, its pretty much what I was looking for.

The screen is OK, I can read everything perfectly due to the font size and the back light. Now under the sun is a different deal, for some reason it's hard to read, but being not much of a day person so it doesn't bother me at all.

The keys are really good, I really like the grip, I just use the tip of my fingers and nails and the keys work like a snapple cap.

Well the software is nothing new, If you've had any of the latest SE it's pretty much the same, but it's like the saying goes: "If it's not broken don't fix it."

I bought this phone because of the specs and the functions it has, being a serious aural junkie I am. Not having 3G available where I live (Or having it, but only a handful of people using it for a really high fee). In other words It's like I traded 3G for Infrared. Since my other interests where the W880 and the W660.

The speaker was perfect, Ive never missed a call (Unless I'm in a different floor watching a movie)

The phone is really slim and sexy it feels great to grab it and it fits perfectly in your pocket.

The only thing I didn't like was the 512mb M2 card they ship with the phone, since I use the phone as a Walkman more than a phone a little space doesn't bother me, but I guess Its because the M2s are more expensive than the Pro duo that other phone use, they cannot ship 1gb ones.

This is an overall great phone with great looks and style, excellent specs and if you're an aural junkie like me, and you don't need 3G maybe this will be it for you too.

This is a great little phone that fits in your pocket or purse, yet it's packed with features and capabilites, tailored for every aspects of your life: FM radio, MP3 player, camera, caledar, internet access... and of course phone !

My only regret is that the FM radio does not work without the earphones, which act as antenaes.
